The Magnificent American Bandog Mastiff

from:

The magnificent American Bandog Mastiff is not a true purebred
dog. Bandog is also commonly spelled bandogge and is used to
describe more than one particular type of dog. These dogs are
nonetheless, very good family pets and are used for many
different things. Here is some information about the magnificent
American Bandog Mastiff. 'Bandog' Many people find the term
Bandog to be a very peculiar term. This word actually came from
Middle England about 1250-1300. The term was, at that time, used
to describe a mastiff type dog that was bound or chained by day
and released at night to protect and guard. The term itself
means "chained". History

The Bandog can be traced back to the 1500s when it was used as
a guard dog. They were also used as hunters and fighters. There
was no set type or bloodline and could include bulldog, shepherd
and others crossed usually with a mastiff. The modern history
of the magnificent American Bandog Mastiff can be traced to
several sources. One of the most widely recognized is Dr. John
Swinford, a veterinarian. In the 1970's he began a breeding
program whose objective was to create the ideal protection dog.
It is generally accepted that he used a combination of 50%
American Pit Bull Terrier and 50% 'very large dog', or some type
of mastiff. Dr. Swinford died at a young age and never perfected
his breed.

Another respected pioneer into the history of the magnificent
American Bandog Mastiff is Joe Lucero. Lucero's dogs are highly
prized for their excellent temperaments and working dog
characteristics. He uses a mix of American Pit Bull Terrier and
Neapolitan Mastiffs. Others use different mixes of similar
breeds of dogs to create a magnificent American Bandog Mastiff.

It is important to choose a dog for the parent's
characteristics. Bandog do not breed true. If you breed a
magnificent American Bandog Mastiff to another, you do not get a
magnificent American Bandog Mastiff. Serious breeders are
working on this and perhaps in the near future it will become a
true breed. In the meantime, beware of backyard breeders, whose
dog's temperaments may not be desirable. Appearance

The magnificent American Bandog Mastiff is a very stocky dog.
It ranges in appearance as there is no real standard. They have
very deep chests and weigh around 100 to 150 pounds. They
usually stand somewhere around 26" at the shoulder, and are a
variety of colors. Temperament and Training

The magnificent American Bandog Mastiff is a very intelligent
dog. They think for themselves and should have an owner who is
experienced and able to properly train a dog of this type. They
are often used as fighting dogs, but are bred most commonly now
as protection dogs. They love attention and are very loyal. One
should not leave a magnificent American Bandog Mastiff alone for
too long. Some tend to bark and howl excessively if they are
neglected and can become destructive. They want to be with their
masters at all times. They are very intelligent and obedient and
are great with children and very trustworthy. They are also
excellent dogs for protection, and will guard their family to
the very end. Conclusion

The magnificent American Bandog Mastiff is a wonderful guard
dog and family pet. They are sometimes called the silent
peacekeepers, because they do not bark at a threat. They tend to
just take care of it. These are great dogs and are a wonderful
addition to a family who is prepared for them.
